Alexander ‘Sandy’ Lay grew up in the Adelaide Hills at Magarey Orchard, where he first learnt basic carpentry skills from his dad, which were passed down from his own father. Sandy’s first ever timber project was building the family dog’s kennel at the age of six.
After a year of traveling, searching for a creative spark, Sandy met people along his journey that inspired him to get back into carpentry, and so when he returned to Adelaide at 21 he began sawing and joining.
Now set up in his home studio, Sandy spends his days making tables, lamps, outdoor furniture and beds from sustainable Australian oak. He’s had a handful of collaborations, building outdoor bars and furniture, but mostly creates commissions for customers around Australia.
